I met him in his hometown of Rawalpindi, Pakistan, where he was the director of the Pakistan Civil Nuclear Program. I first met him this past winter when I was on a visit to Pakistan. He is a very interesting guy, with a very difficult personality type, he is not very good at expressing himself on paper or verbally. So I think it took me a little bit of time to get to know him, but I soon realized that he is truly an amazing guy with an amazing story of perseverance.
He is of military background; he grew up in an army family. His father was in the army and his grandfather was in the army, so he grew up around military life. He went to Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) for his military training and he was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating from PMA. He went to serve his country immediately after graduating from PMA.
He went on to serve in the army for almost 20 years, but he left the military in 2009 after serving as a brigade commander, so he served almost 20 years as a soldier in the army.
