    From a young age, Clark was a keen athlete. He was a highly skilled swimmer, winning medals at national competitions at 11, 12 and 13 years old. He also played soccer for his school team and represented Scotland at the age of 15 in a swimming competition in Helsinki.

    Clark also played guitar, a skill he continued to develop throughout his life. At the age of 13, Clark played guitar in the nightclub circuit in Glasgow and continued playing in local bands until the mid-1960s.

    In the early 1960s, Clark moved to London to further his music career. He played and recorded with musicians including The Kinks, The Creation, and Sandy Denny. In 1964 he formed his own band The Hollies with his friend Allan Clarke. In 1967 Clark appeared on the Soho Square Scene, an album recorded by a group of Liverpool musicians including John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
