Roderick was born on January 31, 1584, in London, England. His parents were Sir Thomas Usher (1528–1590) and Elizabeth Henchman (1538–1597). He had six siblings: Elizabeth, Anne, Edward, Edmond, Robert, and Miriam. His family was wealthy but not noble, having come to England from Ireland in the fourteenth century.
