I’m a strong advocate that your personality type is very much influenced by your childhood. For example, if you were a very social child, chances are that you will have a strong preference for being with people. If you were a very independent child, chances are that you will have a strong preference for being alone.
I used to think that ISTJ had the strongest preference for being alone, but I didn’t have enough data to back this up. I have had ISTJ clients who were very social as children and some who were very independent as children. I know both types of people.
I recently did some analysis on personality type and childhood activities. I found that ISTJs who were more social as children tended to be more introverted as adults. I also found that ISTJs who were more independent as children tended to be more extroverted as adults.
Other research has shown that the percentage of introverts and extroverts in the general population increase as we get older. For instance, about 83% of people between 16 and 18 years old are extroverts and 12% are introverts.
