Born in Turku, she graduated from School of Journalism at the University of Tampere, and worked as a journalist at Suomen Aikakauskirja (Finnish Age Magazine) and as a correspondent for the daily newspaper Ilta-Sanomat. She has also worked as a commentator for Finnish television.
In 1999, she was awarded The Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. In 2012 she received the Medal of Merit of the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE. She was also awarded the Dame of Finland in 2014.
In her free time, she enjoys scuba diving, writing poetry and watching movies.[1]

She is married to Jouni Kettula and has two children: Leena and Kasper.
