So far, so good for this theory. But I’ve also noticed that two of the women were “cured” in exorcisms, which makes me wonder if there is more to this story than meets the eye. For instance, although the movie doesn’t show it, Sister Mary Eunice (played by Amy Irving) was actually the one who got possessed by the Devil in the first place.
She was having an affair with a married man. When the husband found out, he turned his wife against her and she was shunned by the other nuns. She felt like she had no one else to turn to and began talking about the occult with Sister Mary Margaret (played by Pat O’Brien), who was also having an affair with the married man.
At this point, the Devil turned Sister Mary Eunice into a demon, but she still had feelings for her former lover. This is what led to her being possessed.
