In more recent years, the Red Sox have displayed a distinct lack of coordination in their pitching staff. By putting Chris Sale in the rotation and having him pitch every game, they’ve forced him to do something he’s not particularly suited to do. The Red Sox also used Rick Porcello and David Price in spots where they weren’t so much struggling as simply not good enough. By weaning Price and Porcello off the rotation and adapting them to relief work, the Red Sox will be better able to maximize the effectiveness of each pitcher. It’s something that I argued the Red Sox should do last year when they were in first place.
