Excelsior! is a spoof of the children's poem "The Star-Spangled Banner" written by Francis Scott Key for his hometown of Ellicott City, Maryland after the Battle of Baltimore. It refers to a town that is "seven miles high" that he hopes will be more successful than him. The town was initially named after him, but it was soon renamed after him and the original name was later restored.

The poem is also referenced in the first episode of Community titled "Community Orientation Video" as a parody of the real-life national anthem. In the episode, the character Abed Nadir cites the poem as a reason his parents should allow him to be part of a group called "The Study Group".
