Fittipaldi was the first to take the racing world by storm and began his career at the age of 16 in 1973. He dominated the Formula Three category between 1975 and 1978, winning the title three consecutive years. In 1980, at the age of 22, Fittipaldi surprised the entire world by winning the Formula One world championship, receiving the title at the final race of the season in Japan. He drove for McLaren for six years and also raced in 31 Grands Prix for Rob Walker Racing in America. He took a sabbatical from motor racing in 1983 to complete his law degree, and then returned to racing in 1984. In 1985 he won a fifth world title, driving for Lotus-Renault, and he retired two years later to focus on his law career.
Fittipaldi passed away from heart failure on 7 May 2009 at his home in Miami. He was 71.
