To understand the personality type of a person, we must first understand the functions that make up our personality. The four function groups are:

    Sensing

    Intuition

    Thinking

    Feeling

These functions are based on how we process information, and each type of personality has a certain way of processing information. For instance, the sensing function is based around the “senses”, while the intuitive function is based around “intuition”.

The thinking function is based around “thinking” and the feeling function is based around “feeling”.

There are additional functions that are sometimes called “auxiliary functions”, but by their very nature they are not part of the standard function grouping. The auxiliary functions are:

    Assertion / Judging

    Perceiving / Intuition

    Conscientiousness / Thinking

    Artistic / Feeling

The auxiliary functions can also be used in a flexible manner, so ISTJs can use both the sensing and intuitive functions in a complementary manner, for example.
