Nixon was born in 1913 and grew up in a small Indiana town. He attended Whittier College, a small liberal arts school, and graduated in 1935. From 1936 until 1939, he served in the Navy during World War 2.
In 1950, Nixon began his political career as a congressman from California. He served as chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities from 1953 to 1954. He was also a member of the House Committee on Expenditures in Executive Departments from 1955 to 1957.
In 1958 Nixon was elected the 36th Vice President of the United States, under the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower, who selected him to be his running mate.
