I think Kyle is a good example of a person who is a realist and a realist is a realist. He's a realist when it comes to war, a realist about the people he's fighting, and a realist about his own abilities. The element of realism in the book is not meant to be an insult, but to be an honest representation of what everyone involved was like (I would like to believe that the person I'm writing about was like this).
This is not meant to be an insult to Kyle, but I feel like it's relevant to the subject matter. I was also thinking of the article "The Seven Deadly Sins of Tom Clancy", which talks about what I would call "The Seven Deadly Virtues of Tom Clancy". The article talks about Clancy's "aversion to risk-taking" and "a desire to prove himself" as two of his most dangerous flaws. It also talks about Clancy's "egotism" as one of his sins. As for "egotism", I think that it is clear that Kyle has this trait.
