Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Roosevelt led the nation through its greatest economic and military conflicts, leading the way to rapid expansion of the American empire. He believed that the nation should “speak softly and carry a big stick”, but did not hesitate to use the big stick when it was required.
Roosevelt was born in New York City, and grew up in wealthy homes, including the family estate in East Dorset, Vermont. He was home schooled, and did not attend college or university. He entered politics in 1882, serving as the youngest member of the New York State Assembly before being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1883.
