My first reaction to this revelation was that I had been misdiagnosed. The second was that I was relieved that I didn't have a personality disorder. As a young adult, I went to a therapist for confirmation that I was indeed neurotic and having trouble adjusting to my class rank. The therapist was a real piece of work. He wanted me to hurry up and get married. I was totally in love with a guy who was not at all interested in me, but I couldn't figure out how to tell him so as not to hurt his feelings. The only way I could think to communicate this was by letting him read all my letters, which was about two hundred pages of diatribe about all the things wrong with him and all the things right with me. To his credit, he eventually understood what I was saying.
And yet, I was outraged at the suggestion that I might be neurotic, and it took me quite some time to understand that it wasn't me but my support function that was neurotic, and the only way to get over it was to identify the support function (which I did) and let it go.
