The first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced the character of Mike Peterson, a Hydra agent who turned against his former organization, a character strikingly similar to the comic book character John Garrett, who turned against Hydra in the comics. In the comics, Garrett was established as an aloof and somewhat sadistic character with no particular allegiance to Hydra or S.H.I.E.L.D., employed by them initially to gather information on the organization but later to supply the organization with information on other organizations and individuals. Garrett is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and an old friend of Coulson's who was separated from the organization and has since worked for Hydra (or, in the comics, HYDRA Rising, another comic book series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Garrett has also been connected to the Clairvoyant in the comics, a group that is also connected to Hydra in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s first season.
