A self-made man, Del Bosque was born in León, Spain, in 1952. He moved to Argentina when he was only six years old. In 1969, he enrolled at the University of Buenos Aires, where he earned a degree in law and also played for the university team.

He then moved to Spain in 1980, where he began his professional career with Real Valladolid.
