Shūsaku Iwasaki was born on 30 November 1914 in Tokyo, Japan. His father, Shōzō Iwasaki, was an officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. His grandfather Shūji Iwasaki was an official at the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. His mother, Misao Iwasaki (née Yamashita), was the daughter of a samurai, and also studied at Harvard University.
Shusaku Iwasaki was the son of a naval officer, and was educated at Harvard University, where he graduated in 1938 with a BA in English. Afterwards he attended the University of London and received his MA in English literature in 1941. Two years later he received his PhD from Columbia University. During this time he was a member of the American Field Service and the British Council. After graduating from Harvard, he returned to Japan in 1938, where he worked as an English teacher at the Imperial University of Tokyo. He married his first wife, Kazuko Iwasaki, in 1939.
During World War II, Iwasaki served in the Imperial Japanese Navy as a naval officer.
