Dom Pedro I personality type is ESTP, so that explains part of the reason for his irrational decision making. He was very headstrong and had a great will to power. I also think that his lost of trust in his father, brother, and his initial refusal to acknowledge the loss of his son to foreign enemies contributed to his decision making.
I think Emperor Pedro I is a good example of a Personality-Disordered Emperor. He was a very strong leader, but he made a lot of bad decisions in the name of 'stability' and 'order'. Also, he was a very sick man, and had a very strong desire to have children. He was not in a good mental state when he made these decisions. His desire for children was so strong that it drove him to war with Brazil in order to produce an heir. It is my opinion that Pedro II, who was my favorite Emperor, was able to reign more in line with his natural personality after being raised by Franz Joseph, by whom he had a very loving and nurturing influence.
I would suggest that Pedro II had a very good relationship with the people of Brazil the way they were, and he never tried to change them.
