Reagan was born into a family of lawyers, and his father was the lodge master at the Elks lodge in Dixon, Illinois. His mother was a schoolteacher. He had one sibling, brother Ron, who died in infancy. He was raised in Dixon, Illinois, where he attended public schools. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1928 and attended Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois (1928–1931) and the University of Illinois (1931–1933), where he played college baseball. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1933. He enrolled at the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., but did not graduate.
Reagan's first serious job was as a radio announcer for station WHO in Des Moines, Iowa (1934–1935), where he met Nancy Davis, who was to become his wife. When he heard that jobs were available in Los Angeles, he left WHO and moved there in 1939.
Reagan's first marriage to Jane Wyman ended in divorce in 1948.
