The narrator lived in a village in the country, quite in the country, and had no neighbours, excepting near the town in which he was born and brought up. He had a small garden of his own, and he often amused himself there by attempting to grow ornamental flowers. He decided that he would plant some roses; but he soon found that he did not know what kind to choose, so he asked several people what they thought the best kind of rose. They all gave various answers, and at last he said to the carpenter: “Tell me what you think is the best rose to plant in my little garden; I have been thinking about it a good deal lately.”
“Roses are very difficult to grow,” said the carpenter.
“How do you mean?” asked the narrator. “They are easy enough to understand.”
