“I had a very unique childhood,” Carioca says. “My dad was an entrepreneur and a gambler, my mom was an artist, and I had two older brothers who were both very restless, very independent, and very hard to tie down; I think that made me a bit rebellious too.”
Carioca says that his parents were very supportive of his dreams. “I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be an actor. My dad was supportive of that, but he would also always say, ‘Zé, I hope you don’t become a professional gambler!’ I would respond, ‘Dad, I can’t help it if I’m good at it!’ He would say, ‘No, you have to be careful. If you start gambling professionally, you won’t have time to study acting.’ But it was my dream to be an actor, so I would always say yes to any acting job that came along.”
