Brown, the son of a Louisiana sportswriter and a Texas high school teacher, grew up in a small town outside of Tyler. He played football for a Division II school and was a walk-on with Florida State.
He got his first taste of the NFL as the result of a random, serendipitous late-night text message from former Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey. Brown was 18 at the time; Shockey was 29. Brown had been playing receiver at LSU and had been told by his agent that he was going to be a sixth-round pick of the Saints. Brown was on his way to Baton Rouge and had even stopped off for a change of clothes at his hotel room when he got the text from Shockey.
“I had no idea who he was,” Brown said.
