The first time I met Makio Fujiyama was at his first job after graduating from high school. He had graduated from high school with honors, but his grades weren’t good enough to guarantee that he’d be accepted into a prestigious university. He was offered admission into two major schools that weren’t even in Tokyo, so he had no choice but to take the offer of a job at a small bank.
How he came to work there is a story in itself. At the time, I shared an office with him, and he was always complaining about how hard it was to work there. “What kind of company is this? They don’t give us any money!” he’d say.
I knew he had to be joking. He was too bright to be really unhappy with what happened to him.
