According to the theory, squirrels can be tricked into making mistakes by putting food in places where they are likely to be.

A study, published in Animals Behaviour, showed how squirrels can be made to get stuck in their holes by placing nuts on branches higher up than the real nuts.

But the researchers found that only 1 per cent of squirrels were fooled into thinking the food was real.

The researchers said that the squirrels were inconsistent in their behaviour and not all of them fell for the ruse.

“To our knowledge, this is the first report of ‘cheater’ squirrels and one of only a few studies on food-camouflaged animals,” said Joseph Takacs, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Washington’s Department of Biology.

“It’s nice to know that nature has some adjustments built in.”
