Kelly personality type is ESTP, and my daughter is an ISFP, so I'm not sure what her personality type is. She's very quiet and reserved, kind of a nerd. It was a lot of fun to see the way that we approach things and the way she approaches things. We're similar in a lot of ways, but we're very different.
Have any of the characters in the book or in your life influenced you?
I've never been a writer, so I don't know if they have. I've never been a musician. My daughter is a musician, and I'm a writer, but I haven't seen any of that reflected in the book in terms of what I've written.
The chapter "The Nobody" has been called one of the great American novels of the 21st century. What do you think about that?
I'm really proud of it, but I've never really thought about it that way. I just hope that people are reading it and enjoying it.
In an age when so much of our lives are online, what do you say to people who worry that reading must be dead?
I think that people have always read.
