Stephen Wong was born in Hong Kong. He grew up in a family of four children. His father owned a restaurant and his mother was a housewife. Steve was a bright child. He did well in his school and often came to the top of the class. At the age of 12, Stephen Wong became interested in writing. It was a time when he was reading a lot of poems and stories by the great writers such as Rudyard Kipling, Robert Louis Stevenson and James Joyce.
In order to get enough money to buy books, Stephen Wong worked part-time at his father’s restaurant. He would help his father wash dishes and clean the tables after the restaurant was closed for the night. He also helped his father earn money by selling books in the evening.
At the age of 16, Stephen Wong won the Hong Kong New Talent Award and in 1993 he came in first in The British-Chinese Literary Award for the Young Writers category.
