    Rong Wang, a Chinese scholar and diplomat who spent most of his professional life in the United States, is one of the few Chinese people who have become American citizens.

    He was born in a small village in Hainan province, China. At the age of fifteen, he was enrolled at the Guangzhou First Normal School (now the Guangzhou Teachers College) in Guangdong Province, where he studied for three years. In 1900, he entered the Guangdong Provincial School of Law, which was established four years earlier in 1898 by the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Less than a year later, he transferred to the Nanjing University to study law and economics.

    In 1911, Wang was accepted into the United States as a student under a government program that sent a large number of young Chinese to attend American universities. He completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University and then went on to earn a master's degree from Harvard University in 1914. During this time, he also taught as an assistant professor at the Columbia University School of Law and as an instructor at Harvard Business School. In 1918, he received his doctorate from Harvard University.
