Miglin, who died at age 87 in 2013, was a bit of a legend in the field of marketing. He received a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. He served in the Navy during World War II.
In 1960, he founded the company that would become Miglin & Company. The Chicago-based marketing firm grew from a staff of two to more than 500 by the time Miglin retired in 2000.
In his own words, he said, “Everything we do is based on intuition. It’s a feeling I have about a product or a person or a cause or a situation. It’s not math. If you ask me, ‘What is success in marketing?’ I’ll tell you: ‘Success is in the eye of the beholder.’”
