When Kern was a young man growing up in the 1960s, he thought that the world was divided into two camps: extroverts and introverts. (This was before the advent of the “big-hearted, extroverted” type, which Kern seems to have invented.) Kern thought that extroverts were more successful; they were more popular, more charismatic, and more intellectual. Extroverts were the ones who got all the women.
Kern remembered seeing an article about a woman who had taken an IQ test and then had the results translated into English. The woman scored much higher than she had in the original language. Kern then read that the woman had been ranked first in her class at Stanford. Kern thought to himself, “I could do that!”
Kern decided that in order to be a big-hearted, extroverted type of S, he was going to have to become a super-intellectual.
