I would like to point out that ISTP isn't the only personality type that enjoys scientific research. One ISTP friend of mine was a physicist and liked to conduct experiments in his house (he had a lot of input from his ISTP mother). On the other hand, an ENTP friend of mine is a genetics researcher.
In addition, I would like to mention that ISTPs are very interested in statistics, and also enjoy reading about them. ISTPs might even enjoy doing a little bit of data analysis on their own.

ISTPs have a fast mind and a fast feeler feelers. They pay more attention to small things. They enjoy reading books and articles about science and philosophy, and will be a great help in a classroom where a topic is being discussed from a philosophical/scientific angle. They enjoy helping others understand complex subjects, especially when it is approached from a different angle.
In addition, ISTPs will be hard to get away from once you've invited them into an argument.
