Hank is a disheartened cop who is looking to get out of his life and get a new start. He is a very intelligent detective who has a hard time connecting with others on a personal level. This makes him a very lonely person. His partner, Amy Miller, is a very intelligent young woman who is also slightly disconnected from others. She had some problems at home and has been working at the police station to try and make some money. However, it is her job that gives her some distance from the world around her.
In this book, the main character, Hank, is on a case of a missing girl named Jenny Miller. Her parents believe she may have been kidnapped and headed to California to try and find her. Hank and Amy decide to go with the Miller family to California to help them look for Jenny and to try and find out what has happened to her. They travel to San Francisco and then head off into the back country in search of Jenny.
