In the New Testament, Jesus often used parables and analogies to illustrate his teachings. For example, in Luke 13:10–17 , Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a master of a house who invites his servants to dinner. The master calls one and sends him on an errand, then sends another servant to tell the first servant where dinner is being served and to invite him to join them. At dinner, the master tells his servants to sit down at the table and serve themselves while he serves others. The first servant has no idea where dinner is being served. When he dines at the master's table, he refuses to sit at the same table as the other servants; but when he sees that after all he is invited to dine with the master, then he comes and dines with his fellow servants. The parable reflects Jesus' teaching that people must come from inside themselves and seek out God's kingdom rather than everyone competing for it.
