I made a point of including the word “wish” in my description of Sylar’s powers above because I think it is important to understand the difference. Sylar’s ability to empathize with other people’s emotions is one of the most powerful abilities in this series, but it is very different from the classic “wish” power. The classic wish power was often used by characters to grant their own wishes, but Sylar’s empathy power allows him to affect other people’s emotions.
For example, I could wish that all of you would feel good about yourselves, but if I did that it wouldn’t work. However, the instant I tell you that you are feeling good about yourself, your brain will quickly call up memories of your friends laughing at your expense. It will cause you to feel bad again.
Sylar’s power works in a similar way.
