Cabrera's career as an FBI agent began at the bottom, as she joined the bureau as a Special Agent (SAC). She was eventually promoted to first line supervisor and then to the position of Special Agent in Charge (SAC) at the FBI's Miami field office. According to the FBI's official website, Cabrera oversaw the investigation of national security threats and served as liaison with other law enforcement agencies.
In 2004, Cabrera was assigned to the FBI's Counterterrorism Division, where she worked as the Assistant Legal Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. She was also an advisor to U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Lorna Arnold. She returned to the FBI's Miami office in 2008 as Special Agent in Charge and Director of the National Security Branch. Cabrera was responsible for all investigations and operations involving domestic and international terrorism.
Working undercover, at least 40-50 times a year, Cabrera has been able to infiltrate numerous terrorist networks, including al-Qaeda and its branches, and to foil numerous terrorist plots.
