Bai Zhi was originally a female spirit born from a mountain flower and a dragon. She was sent by her parents to marry a man to protect the people from evil spirits. The emperor woke up to find that Bai Zhi was gone but he was too embarrassed to report her escape. So he got her replaced with a statue of the same design, which he kept in his room.
