Rider was created by writer Gary Friedrich and artist Don Perlin. A former stuntman, Friedrich was looking to create a motorcycle character with "one hell of a bad attitude." Although he had used the name Ghost Rider in an issue of Marvel Comics' Tomb of Dracula (1972), he wanted to use the name of an actual motorcycle with a similar design.
The character's first appearance was in Marvel Preview #4 (1976). Friedrich later wrote with artist Mike Ploog, creating several Ghost Rider stories for Marvel's black-and-white horror titles, including Tomb of Dracula (1973), The Eternals (1976), and Marvel Preview (1976). The series was canceled in 1981. The character's popularity led to his starring solo title, Ghost Rider (January 1982), written by David Michelinie and illustrated by Perlin.
The character made its color debut in Marvel Two-in-One #94 (April 1982), by writer Mark Gruenwald and artist Ron Lim.
