Charlie Utter personality type is ESTP, but I don’t think that makes him a jerk. (Although it does make him more likely to be a jerk.) I’m not sure that his personality type is even that important to the story. He’s just an asshole.
This is the point at which a huge portion of the book comes down to the relationship between Alan and Margot. These two are basically in love, and Alan is trying to get Margot to love him. Margot’s not interested. She loves him, but she doesn’t want to be in love with him. That part of the story is completely okay. It’s part of what makes Alan heroic. He wants her in his life, but he also wants her to be happy. He doesn’t want her to be miserable, even if that means he’ll lose her.
Margot, though, is a bitch.
She could be a lot of other things, but she’s not a bitch. She’s not rude, and she’s not mean. She has friends who like her and care about her, and she has a very loving family.
