Bunk's father Lyle Moreland is a stereotypical "Western" type, having grown up on a farm in Aumsville, Oregon. He married Dusty Koppe who was raised in the city of Portland. As the story begins Bunk is living with them in Aumsville, but they are planning to move to Portland so they can have a better life for their children. Dusty Moreland III is also living with them.
