Suzuki, who voices Toru, is a long-time fan of the series, and has stated that he feels a special connection with Toru because "he has to carry the hopes of all the citizens on his shoulders." This, along with his previous work as a professional wrestler, was what inspired him to play a character who is "a strong man who does not know how to express himself." Suzuki felt a responsibility to make the character as realistic as possible, stating "I wanted to make him as human as possible, so I tried [to infuse] my own emotions into him."
He also noted that he was nervous about voicing Toru because Aoki was so popular among the Japanese fan community; he wanted to prove himself worthy of being cast as Toru by taking on the role.
Suzuki is a fan of the original game and wanted to take on the role of Toru because he is "a hero that everybody loves." The main aspect Suzuki had to keep in mind while playing the game was conveying the attitude of Toru without going overboard or making him so "strong that he's scary."
