I just read a piece by a midwesterner about how she can’t stand the New Yorkers who, “even to her, seem like a bunch of extreme left wingers who aren’t afraid to say things that are just plain wrong.” Now, I too have been told that I am extreme left wing. And when I was younger and still in my mid-twenties, I once made a joke to my mother during one of her political rants that I was a socialist.
I was shocked when she said, “No, you’re not. You’re just a liberal.” It took me years to find a kind word for liberal in my vocabulary again.
