That’s what it felt like to me, and in the case of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, it felt so right that I got really excited about what it might say about the band’s growth as an entity. I was fascinated by long-form storytelling and narratives as “the new rock n’ roll” and, in their own way, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have always been narrative-based bands.
I was also intrigued by a band that seemed to be getting more focused and coherent as the years went on. From the beginning, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had a tremendous amount of energy, but it was often unfocused and unfocused. I found it fascinating that this band that I felt was so loose and free would soon be making songs like “I Need To Know” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream” and “American Girl” and “Refugee.”
I was also struck by how Tom Petty could manage to be so personal and shy yet so confident in his songs.
