Lieutenant-General "The Honourable" Roméo Antonius Dallaire is a Canadian humanitarian, author, statesman, senator and general. Dallaire served as Force Commander of UNAMIR, the ill-fated United Nations peacekeeping force (1993 - 1994) for the Rwandan Genocide and attempted to stop the genocide that was being waged by Hutu extremists. Dallaire's role in peacekeeping throughout the Rwandan Genocide resulted in posttraumatic stress disorder, a suicide attempt in 2000, and later testifying in the International Criminal for Rwanda against Rwandan genocide perpetrators in 2004. In March 2005, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada and represented the province of Quebec. After January 2014, he decided to leave the Senate in order to spend more time public speaking, researching, and overcoming his struggles with posttraumatic stress disorder. In 2019, the Canadian Government announced the establishment of the the Dallaire Centre for Peace and Security.
