"It all just kind of happened," Merritt said. "I remember being fascinated with different things and learning things. I couldn't wait to learn about different things. At the time I was really shy, but it's funny because I was always learning new things and never stopped. I had to learn how to read, so I had to learn how to read. But it makes me wonder what else will I need to learn?"
The next step for Merritt, who turned 18 on Aug. 17, is to continue her education at the University of Central Florida, where she plans to major in communications.
"My mom is my biggest supporter," she said. "I started seventh grade in a different school because I moved here from California. I was really shy. It was hard to make friends, but my mom pushed me to try. My mom knew how much I wanted this scholarship and she pushed me to get it."
Merritt is also the daughter of Bob Merritt, a retired career firefighter for Palos Verdes Peninsula Fire Protection District in California, who works full time as a nurse at Torrance Memorial Hospital.
Kelsey Alaine Merritt is a Filipino-American model best known for being the first Filipino to walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and to appear in the pages of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
