Heikichi Nakao is the only child of two professional musicians. He was born in Osaka, Japan. After graduating from high school, he went to Tokyo to study drama, then went on to work as an actor. He then moved to New York, where he started his own production company, Nakao Productions.
His first film work was as an assistant director to Robert Altman. He worked on many of Altman's features, including "The Player" (1992), "3 Women" (1992), "Short Cuts" (1993), "The Gingerbread Man" (1994), "Kansas City" (1996) and "Prêt-à-Porter" (1998).
He has written and directed several feature-length documentaries; the most recent was "Mentos: The Movie" (2006). Other work includes "The Devil's Doorway" (1999), "The Blind Artist" (2002) and "Kaito" (2005).
