He always thought that he would end up in the kitchen of a starship, but he didn't expect that to happen. His first assignment on the ship was as a chef in the mess hall. He was unable to keep up with the incessant requests for food from the crew, but was still willing to go the extra mile. He served as a good example for the crew, and because of his willingness to do whatever it took, he was able to make friends with the crew.
He eventually became the first chef of Voyager, and because Voyager was a long-term mission, Neelix was able to build his reputation. His job was to prepare food for the officers on board, including many of the senior staff members. He often made them tips on new recipes, which they would try on their off time. He became known for being able to whip up something delicious no matter what was on his menu.
