Tony Armstrong-Jones was the grandson of the 1st Baron Armstrong-Jones, an Anglo-Irish aristocrat. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. During his time there he became president of the Oxford Union, in which capacity he gave a speech in favour of women’s suffrage in 1918. He was once pursued by suffragettes, but they were unable to capture him.
He spent much of his early career in the Foreign Office. He was the Ambassador to Paris in 1941, when he was knighted. He held several other posts during the Second World War. He was Secretary to the British Military Mission in Washington, D.C. from 1942–1943. He was the British ambassador to the United States from 1943–1946, and later served as private secretary to Clement Attlee, the Prime Minister, from 1946-1952.
He was the 1st Baron Armstrong-Jones from 1952–1958. He was appointed High Commissioner to Canada in 1958, and served in that role until his retirement in 1963.
