But fans of the series are here to prove them wrong.
"You might not be the main character, but you play a huge role in the story," says Hana Ito, a fan from Los Angeles, who traveled more than 1,000 miles to meet the group.
Ito said she has been a fan for 12 years, dating back to the original anime series.
"It's kind of like a family," says Ito. "I just want to hug them."
"I'm really surprised they've been able to maintain this long," says Jon Snyder, who traveled with Ito to the Anime Central convention. "We were just joking that the Japanese government should pay the group to protect them from cyber-terrorists."
Anna Murashige is a Russian-Japanese idol singer. She is a 1st generation member of the idol girl group HKT48, and a former member of NMB48 represented by Twin Planet. She is in Team KIV in HKT48.
