Ding Zeren was born in September 1874 in Qingyang County, Shandong Province. The county name Ding means “clear.” The younger brother of Ding Guodong, Ding Zeren was a member of the Huai Army, which fought against Japan in the Sino-Japanese War (1894–95). He was first commissioned as a major general in the Beiyang Army and later promoted to lieutenant general. During the Northern Expedition, he was the commander of the 5th Cavalry Group. After the founding of the Republic of China, he was the first commander of the Nanjing Military District.
