Scarpa was a well-liked student at Murray High School. He was a member of the student council and played football and basketball. He also participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, including the school band.
Scarpa graduated from Murray High School in 1963 after attending part-time for much of his youth. He then enlisted in the United States Army in 1963.
