I was raised in a very poor neighborhood in London, England, and I moved to Los Angeles when I was 5 years old. My parents never went to college, and they were very, very poor. I lived with my mom and my dad, and we didn’t have any money at all, not even enough for food.
My dad worked as a cleaner and a bus driver and a carpenter, and my mom worked at a coffee shop and as a cashier at a grocery store. She worked really hard – she was one of those people who was always busy working – but we were still not able to live comfortably.
One day, my mom opened up her newspaper one day, saw an ad for an interview, and applied for it.
